For years, businesses viewed old files, emails, proposals, SOPs, and project documentation as little more than digital clutter. Today, those archives may have real value. As artificial intelligence companies search for high-quality training data, a growing market has emerged for the detailed business knowledge hidden inside decades of operational records. Some organizations are even being approached about selling access to historical documents, communications, and workflows to help train next-generation AI systems. Recent reporting has highlighted companies receiving significant payments for archives of emails, Slack messages, project records, and other operational data that provide real-world examples of how work gets done.

But organizations should proceed carefully. Removing names and obvious identifiers does not guarantee anonymity. Business documents often contain context, customer details, operational processes, pricing information, or intellectual property that can still reveal sensitive information. Once data changes hands, companies may have limited visibility into how it is used, stored, combined with other data sources, or incorporated into future AI models.

There are also legal and contractual considerations. Customer agreements, confidentiality clauses, industry regulations, and intellectual property rights may limit what information can be shared. Some data-sale agreements may even include restrictions on future transfers or ownership changes, creating complications during mergers, acquisitions, or the eventual sale of a business. What seems like a straightforward opportunity to monetize old data today could create unexpected obligations years down the road.

Before signing any agreement, organizations should conduct a thorough review of the data involved, understand exactly what rights are being transferred, and evaluate the long-term business implications. As AI continues to drive demand for real-world business knowledge, your archives may indeed be an asset. The key is making sure you understand what you’re giving up before deciding what they’re worth.

Ask Rami

Question: “Everyone is talking about AI agents now. How is that different from what we already have?“

Answer: It is a fair question, and the short version is that assistants answer while agents act. Instead of asking a question and getting a paragraph back, an agent can work through several steps on its own, like reading a request, checking your system, drafting the response, and updating the record. That is genuinely useful, and it also means real permissions inside your business, so the setup matters as much as the technology.

About Rami

Hello, my name is Rami. I graduated from Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, IL, with a bachelor’s degree in computer science. I continued my studies to earn a master’s degree in computer science, focusing on data analytics and AI. I am part of the AI & Automations team at IT360, where I help clients start their AI journey and build automations of all shapes and sizes, from custom solutions to implementing existing AI systems into their business. Outside of work and the constantly evolving landscape of AI, I enjoy spending time outdoors fishing (which is more like casting, because I don’t do much catching) and tinkering with electronics

DID YOU KNOW

A computer that takes just 15 extra minutes per day to boot, load programs, or complete routine tasks can cost more than 60 hours of employee productivity each year. If employees frequently complain about slow devices, it may be time for a hardware refresh review. Replacing aging equipment often delivers one of the fastest returns on a technology investment.

Holiday Scams are Coming: How to Protect Your business During the Busiest Season of the Year

The holiday season is one of the busiest times of year for cybercriminals. While businesses focus on year-end deadlines, invoices, shipping notifications, and vendor communications, attackers take advantage of the increased activity and distractions.

Common holiday-related scams include:

  • Fake package delivery notifications
  • Phishing emails disguised as vendors or suppliers
  • Fraudulent invoice requests
  • Gift card scams targeting executives and managers
  • Holiday charity or donation scams
  • Fake account verification requests

The challenge is that many of these messages look legitimate. Attackers often mimic trusted brands, vendors, or business partners to trick employees into clicking links or sharing sensitive information.

To reduce risk:

  • Verify unexpected financial requests through a phone call
  • Enable multi-factor authentication on business accounts
  • Train employees to identify phishing emails
  • Keep devices and software updated
  • Report suspicious messages immediately

Cybersecurity is often strongest when employees know what to watch for. A few extra seconds verifying an email or request can prevent significant financial loss and business disruption.

As holiday activity increases, awareness remains one of the most effective security tools your organization has.
